Omnibus spending bill… “must pass”

Yesterday, Congressional “leaders” released a 2,000-plus page Omnibus spending bill with a price tag of $1.3 trillion. Members of the House had less than 24 hours to read the bill before the vote, and just a little while ago the House voted to pass this monstrosity. Now the bill will move on to the Senate.

Additionally, this bill “must pass” this week in order to continue funding the government when it runs out of spending authority tomorrow. Once again, Congressional “leaders” are using a “must-pass” bill tied to a government shutdown to extort votes from members of Congress that fly in the face of the campaign promises that were made to the American people.

The above paragraphs look like something we would have written in 2011 when John Boehner was busy giving Barack Obama and the Democrats everything they wanted. We fought hard to remove Boehner as Speaker, and to give Republicans control of the US Senate and the White House. We achieved all of those things over the course of the last 7 years, and the American people expected we would be rewarded with balancing the federal budget, cutting wasteful government spending, securing our border with a wall, defunding sanctuary cities, and finally repealing ObamaCare.

Instead, we’re getting none of that. Republicans campaigned on all of these things for the last 8 years and President Trump campaigned on draining the swamp. This is not what draining the swamp looks like. This omnibus bill is not only a slap in the face to voters who expected those campaign promises to be kept, but it’s a betrayal of epic proportions that could see voters respond by staying home in November.

Call and tweet Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell and tell them this is not what we expected when we put Republicans in charge. Ask them if they would rather be in the minority, because if so they should continue passing $1.3 trillion spending bills that no one has the time to read.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R)    (202) 225-3031
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R)     (202) 224-2541

Call and tweet your Senators and tell them enough is enough. It’s time to end this madness and stop spending future generations further and further into debt that will never be paid.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D)    (202) 224-2315

Sen. Robert Portman (R)    (202) 224-3353

It’s not too late to stop this atrocious bill from passing. The President, Congressional “leaders,” and your elected officials need to hear from you now!

In liberty,

Jenny Beth Martin
