Maroney Arrested – Do GOP Donors Still Support Him?

West Virginia Sen. Mike Maroney was recently arrested for indecent exposure at a gambling parlor. He has been removed as Chair of the Senate Health Committee and hopefully will be resigning soon. Maroney was defeated in the May Primary by Chris Rose. We’ll get some commentary on this and other issues from WV Sen. Mike Stuart who was an early supporter of Rose.

MARSHALL COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Republican West Virginia State Sen. Mike Maroney was arrested on Tuesday and was removed from his senate committee responsibilities.

Marshall County Prosecutor Joe Canestraro told Nexstar’s WTRF that Sen. Maroney is accused of “committing an overt act of sexual gratification” at a gaming parlor in Glen Dale on Sunday sometime between noon and 12:30 p.m.

The senator from Marshall County has been charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct, WTRF reported. Disorderly conduct carries a 24-hour jail sentence and a $100 fine, indecent exposure is up to one year in jail and a $500 fine.

Prosecutor Canestrano told WTRF he was arraigned and released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond.

Senate President Craig Blair (R-Berkeley) released a statement Wednesday morning saying he has been removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Resources.

“Above all, I am deeply concerned for our friend and colleague, Senator Mike Maroney,” Sen. Blair said in a statement. “The facts that have emerged are troubling, and I am disappointed. However, in this time, our primary focus is on the well-being of Senator Maroney.”

Sen. Maroney was one of the few incumbent Republicans who lost in the May 2024 primaries. He lost to Chris Rose and, according to the Secretary of State’s website, no Democrats filed to run for that seat.
