‘The Devil Is Taking Control of This Land’

S.C. State Senator Stepped Up to the Podium During Confederate Flag Debate and Delivered a Fiery Rebuke. But It Had Nothing to Do With the Flag: ‘The Devil Is Taking Control of This Land’

SC-senThe South Carolina State Senate took up the ongoing debate over the Confederate flag on Monday, but one politician had a very different subject on his mind: gay marriage.

Republican Sen. Lee Bright issued a harsh rebuke of the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized same-sex unions across America, taking to the floor in a fiery three-minute speech that aired on C-SPAN.

“Members of the Senate, I heard our president sing a religious hymn,” Bright proclaimed, speaking of President Barack Obama’s recent singing of “Amazing Grace.” “And then Friday night, I watched the White House be lit up in the abomination colors. … It’s time for the church to rise up.”

The senator said that he would like to see clerks and others who issue marriage licenses be protected from needing to “betray their faith” if they oppose gay marriage based on their religious convictions.

“Romans chapter 1 is clear. The Bible is clear,” Bright continued. “This nation was founded by Judeo-Christian principles, and they are under assault by men in black robes who were not elected by you.”

He went on to say that the acceptance of gay marriage could mean that America is no longer a nation under God, but a “one nation gone under” — a reference to a 1984 speech from President Ronald Reagan during which the commander in chief said: ”Without God, there is a coarsening of the society. And without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

“The devil is taking control of this land and we’re not stopping him,” Bright said.
