Dear Mr. Garrison,
Thank you for taking the time to address our concerns by calling a special meeting. We have spoken to many other Districts who have all stated they will not implement Critical Race Theory, 1619 Project or Planned Parenthood’s Sex Education curriculum. We have serious concerns regarding Marietta City Schools as we were unable to get a clear response other than that you are currently not presenting this material to students.
Critical Race Theory was made for the collegiate legal atmosphere to view different laws through the lenses of race. This was not created for grade school and high school students.
Nikole Hannah-Jones’s work, The 1619 Project, in the New York Times Magazine, has received much criticism from historians and scholars alike. It attempts to reimagine the American Revolution as an effort to protect and preserve slavery from a weakly attested British shift towards emancipation. According to The 1619 Project A Critique, even one of the New York Times own consulted fact checkers broke her silence and revealed that she had cautioned the publisher against pushing this thesis. Jones’s work attempts to reconcile the irreducible complexities of the past to fit a simplistic political narrative. The authors appear to be weaponizing the history of slavery to attack modern capitalism.
Planned Parenthood’s Sex Education curriculum normalizes child sex, and teaches them explicit sexual vocabulary. This material promotes early sexual independence and fails to even recognize abstinence as a potential goal.
Parents are responsible to teach their children life lessons. The schools are responsible to teach math, science etc. We do feel that September is too late and we request an earlier meeting.
Superintendent Hampton was quoted in his interview with Marietta Patch that the Marietta School Board will adopt material based on State standards. I would urge you to reconsider this stance on conformity with the State, especially if the material being presented is political, misinterpreted, irresponsible, harmful to students and harmful for our community.
I would like a direct link to the recently adopted Marietta City Schools Curriculum Guide. I would also like to have a public viewing of current year curriculum materials, including videos, internet links and lesson handouts.
Please let us know when an earlier meeting can be scheduled. I strongly believe I speak for many concerned community members and parents.
Best Regards,
